The Courtyard

Step into the bustling heart of medieval King John’s Castle. The courtyard was once a hive of activity, where blacksmiths forged tools and weapons, goods arrived at the watergate, and the gatehouse managed deliveries to the castle. Walk the remains of the Great Hall built circa 1280, explore the siege shelters, and take a quiet moment in the chapel sanctuary.

Today, the courtyard brings history to life with medieval games inspired by fair days of the past. Challenge yourself with tug-of-war, medieval seesaw, quoits, horseshoe throwing, or a game of noughts and crosses. These activities are included in your ticket and are perfect for visitors of all ages, combining fun, history, and a sense of the energy that once filled the castle grounds.

Castle Towers

Climb the towers of King John’s Castle and enjoy sweeping views over the River Shannon and the medieval streets of Limerick. These formidable stone structures once served as lookout points and defensive strongholds, providing a strategic advantage during centuries of sieges and battles. As you explore the towers, imagine the soldiers who stood watch here, the signals sent across the walls, and the castle life that unfolded from above — a perfect blend of history, architecture, and breathtaking panoramas.
