Learning History in the Heart of Limerick

King John’s Castle offers immersive, curriculum-linked learning experiences for students of all ages. Located on King’s Island in Limerick, the castle provides a hands-on environment where students explore Irish history, medieval life, and civic development through interactive exhibitions, castle architecture, and the vibrant courtyard.

Primary School: Self-Guided Tours

Students explore the castle at their own pace, discovering:

  • Viking and Norman settlements and their impact on Limerick
  • Medieval trade, crafts, and daily life
  • Castle architecture and defensive structures
  • Observation and discussion activities to develop historical thinking skills
  • Children will receive an activity sheet to reinforce their learning and a King Johns Castle pencil as a memento  from their visit.

Secondary students engage with the castle to:

  • Analyse the social and political role of Norman castles in Ireland
  • Explore military strategies, sieges, and medieval law and governance

  • Participate in hands-on activities to reinforce learnings
  • 2 hours
  • 10 per student
